Two Wolves The Battle Within

In a village nestled among towering mountains, an elder sat around a crackling fire, his grandchildren gathered eagerly at his feet. The elder was known for his wisdom, and his stories were loved by all who listened. That evening, as the firelight danced across their faces, the elder sensed that a lesson in life was needed.

With a thoughtful look, he began, “Inside each of us, there are two wolves that are locked in a constant struggle. These wolves live not in the wild but within our hearts and minds.”

The children’s eyes widened, for wolves were animals of mystery and power. “Two wolves?” they murmured, exchanging glances.

The elder nodded. “Yes, two very different wolves. One wolf is dark and fierce. It is filled with anger, envy, greed, pride, and resentment. It represents every thought and feeling that brings us pain, every shadow we allow to cloud our hearts. This wolf feeds on our fears, our grudges, and our desire for power.”

The children shuddered at the description of the dark wolf, picturing its glinting eyes and sharp teeth.

“But the other wolf,” the elder continued, “is bright and calm. This wolf is full of love, kindness, humility, compassion, and peace. It embodies hope, generosity, and forgiveness. It shines with gentleness and strength, guiding us toward unity and joy.”

The children seemed relieved, imagining the gentle, wise face of this bright wolf. But their curiosity soon turned to worry.

One child, his brow furrowed, asked, “Grandfather, if both wolves are in us, then how do we know which one will win?”

The elder smiled, his eyes glinting with a secret he had long held. “That, my dear, is the question of life. You see, the wolf that wins is the one you choose to feed. Every thought you entertain, every choice you make, every feeling you hold onto—it is food. If you give attention and energy to the dark wolf, it will grow stronger. But if you nurture the bright wolf with your kindness, courage, and patience, it will become powerful and guide your path.”

The children sat in silence, absorbing the wisdom of the elder’s words.

“Even in difficult times, we have the power to choose which wolf we nourish,” the elder added. “If we want peace, we must feed the bright wolf, even when the dark wolf tries to claw its way forward. Every day, every moment, we have that choice.”

The fire crackled softly as the elder finished speaking, and the children remained quiet, reflecting on the two wolves within themselves. As they drifted off to sleep that night, each child held the image of the two wolves, understanding that they held a great power—the power to choose who they would become.
