In a distant land, Luqman, a man of great insight, was captured during a battle and sold into slavery. His new master, a wealthy merchant, treated him no better than the other slaves, who were strong and handsome. Luqman, however, stood out for his wisdom rather than his appearance, though many of the other slaves did not appreciate it. They would mock his simplicity and burden him with their tasks, thinking little of his patience and character.
The master, known for his many orchards, would send his slaves to harvest the fruits when they ripened. However, most of them would sneak bites of the fruits rather than collect them for their owner. One day, the merchant grew suspicious that the yield was much lower than expected. Furious, he demanded to know who was responsible for eating the fruit instead of bringing it back. The slaves, eager to protect themselves, all pointed to Luqman, falsely accusing him of the theft.
Instead of defending himself with heated words, Luqman remained calm and suggested a test to prove the truth. “Master, let us all drink warm water. This will reveal who has eaten from your orchards, as those who consumed the fruit will not be able to hold it down.”
Intrigued by Luqman’s suggestion, the merchant agreed. The slaves were given warm water to drink, and soon enough, those who had eaten the fruit started to feel ill. One by one, they vomited, revealing the evidence of their guilt. Luqman, on the other hand, remained unscathed, his honor intact.
Humbled by the revelation, the merchant realized his error. He immediately apologized to Luqman, acknowledging his wisdom and integrity. From that day forward, Luqman was no longer treated as a common slave but was entrusted with the responsibility of managing the merchant’s household, gaining respect and authority for his sharp mind and honest heart.
