In a vast forest, there resided a powerful lion. One day, his wife commented on his foul breath, stating it was quite unpleasant. Embarrassed and furious, the lion sought validation for her claim from others in the forest. He summoned three animals to his lair.
The first to arrive was a sheep. The lion opened his mouth wide and asked, “Tell me, dear Sheep, does my breath smell foul?” The sheep, believing the lion desired honesty, replied, “Yes, mighty Lion, your breath does indeed have a disagreeable odor.” Unfortunately for the sheep, this truth angered the lion, who swiftly pounced and devoured it.
Next, the lion called for the wolf. Hesitant after witnessing the fate of the sheep, the wolf answered cautiously, “Why would anyone say such a thing? Your breath is as sweet as a blooming flower!” The lion, enraged by the wolf’s flattery, roared and attacked, ending the wolf’s life as well. “Another cowardly flatterer!” he growled.
Finally, it was the fox’s turn. Knowing the grim outcomes of the previous animals, the clever fox approached with caution. He cleared his throat and said, “Oh, dear Lion, I have been suffering from a terrible cold lately. Regrettably, I cannot smell anything—pleasant or unpleasant.”
The lion, intrigued by the fox’s cleverness, decided to spare his life, realizing that sometimes, a wise response can save one from danger.
Moral:
Avoid involving yourself in perilous situations, as you may suffer unjustly. Often, it’s wise to choose your words carefully and stay away from unnecessary conflict.
