Once in a bustling town, there lived a Miser who kept his gold coins buried in a secluded spot in his garden. Each day, he would sneak out to the hiding place, dig up the coins, and count them meticulously, ensuring none were missing. His secret visits were so frequent that a cunning Thief, who had been watching him, soon figured out where the treasure was hidden. One moonlit night, the Thief quietly unearthed the coins and vanished into the darkness.
The next morning, the Miser rushed to his secret spot only to find the ground disturbed and his precious gold gone. Overcome with anguish, he lamented loudly, wailing and tearing his hair in despair. A curious passerby, hearing the Miser’s cries, approached him.
“What troubles you so, friend?” asked the passerby.
“My treasure! Oh, my treasure!” the Miser sobbed. “It has been stolen!”
“Stolen? What treasure?” the stranger asked, pointing at the empty hole. “Why keep your gold buried there? Would it not be wiser to keep it in your home, where you could use it when needed?”
“Use it?” the Miser shouted, horrified. “I never intended to spend a single coin! I would never touch it!”
The stranger picked up a nearby stone and tossed it into the hole. “In that case,” he said with a grin, “cover this stone with the dirt instead. It holds as much value to you as the gold you lost!”
The Miser paused, realizing the truth in the stranger’s words. His gold, which he had hoarded and never used, had become worthless to him.
Moral:
Wealth is only valuable when it serves a purpose. Hoarding riches without using them wisely offers no real benefit.
