Hansel and Gretel

Once upon a time, in a small village at the edge of a vast, enchanted forest, lived a young brother and sister named Hansel and Gretel. Their family was struggling to survive due to a great famine that had swept through the land. Food was scarce, and their parents, driven by desperation, began to worry about how they could continue to feed their children.

One night, Hansel overheard their parents whispering about leading the children deep into the forest in hopes that they would be taken in by someone more fortunate. Alarmed, Hansel shared this with Gretel, and together, they decided to be brave.

The next morning, as their parents led them through the winding forest paths, Hansel, thinking quickly, left small pieces of bark from the trees as they walked, marking the way back home. As the sun began to set, their parents told them to wait by a large oak tree while they “searched for food.” Hansel and Gretel knew the truth—their parents would not return.

When darkness fell and the forest grew cold, the two children followed the trail of bark pieces Hansel had scattered. After hours of walking, they made it back home, much to the surprise of their parents. They were welcomed with tears and apologies, but deep down, Hansel and Gretel knew this wouldn’t be the last time.

Not long after, their parents, still struggling, once again brought them into the forest. This time, Hansel had no bark or stones to leave behind. Instead, he tore small pieces from the loaf of bread they were given and left crumbs on the ground. However, as they tried to follow the path home, they discovered that birds had eaten every crumb.

Lost and hungry, Hansel and Gretel wandered deeper into the forest. After what seemed like hours, they stumbled upon an odd little house. It wasn’t made of stone or wood but appeared to be built entirely of sweet-smelling gingerbread and candy. Hungry and tired, they couldn’t resist breaking off a piece to eat.

As they were nibbling, an old woman appeared at the door. She smiled warmly and invited them inside, promising them a meal and a place to rest. But the woman wasn’t as kind as she seemed. She was a wicked enchantress who used her candy house to lure children in, only to trap them and fatten them up for her dark purposes.

Days passed, and Hansel was locked in a cage, fed richly every day to make him grow plump. Gretel, meanwhile, was forced to clean and cook under the witch’s watchful eyes. But Gretel wasn’t easily fooled—she soon realized the witch’s wicked plan.

When the witch checked Hansel’s finger to see if he had fattened enough, Hansel tricked her by offering her a small twig instead. Frustrated by how long it was taking, the witch decided she could wait no longer. “Gretel, light the oven! It’s time to feast,” she commanded, planning to cook Hansel that very day.

Gretel pretended not to know how to start the oven. “I’m afraid I don’t know how,” she said, feigning innocence. “Show me how, and I’ll do as you say.”

Annoyed, the witch bent down to demonstrate, and in that moment, Gretel pushed her into the oven and shut the door, trapping her inside. The witch screamed and pounded, but Gretel stood firm.

With the witch gone, Hansel and Gretel were free. They searched the house and discovered that the witch had hidden away treasures of gold and jewels. Taking what they could carry, the siblings found their way back through the forest, this time using the sun’s light as their guide.

Upon returning home, they were welcomed by their parents, who had been desperately searching for them. Hansel and Gretel forgave them, and with the wealth they brought, their family never went hungry again.
