One day, a lion, a wolf, and a fox set out together for a hunt in the thick wilderness. After a long pursuit, their efforts were rewarded with three significant catches: a massive Nile cow, a sturdy wild goat, and a nimble rabbit. As the trio gathered around their hard-earned prey, the lion observed that both the wolf and the fox were eyeing the spoils, each eager to claim a share for themselves. Being the king of the jungle, the lion decided to test their judgment.
The lion turned to the wolf and commanded, “You, divide the hunt among us fairly.”
The wolf, thinking this was his moment to show boldness and cunning, confidently puffed out his chest and declared, “O great king, the Nile cow—being the largest—rightfully belongs to you. The wild goat is my share, and the rabbit is enough for the fox.”
The lion’s golden eyes flashed with anger. His roar echoed through the jungle as he shouted, “How dare you speak of fairness in my presence while greedily claiming the best for yourself!” With a powerful swipe of his paw, the lion struck the wolf, killing him instantly.
The fox, witnessing the fate of the wolf, trembled with fear. She knew her turn had come, but unlike the wolf, she had learned a valuable lesson. The lion, still fuming but curious, turned to the fox and said, “Now, you divide the hunt.”
The fox, trembling but quick-witted, bowed her head low and spoke in a soft, respectful voice, “Your Majesty, the Nile cow is perfect for your breakfast, the wild goat will serve well for your lunch, and the rabbit is a fine meal for your dinner.” Her voice was humble, yet her words were filled with wisdom.
The lion’s rage melted into a grin of satisfaction. Pleased with the fox’s clever response, he asked, “Where did you learn such fairness and wisdom?”
The fox, still bowing, replied, “O great king, I learned it from the fate of the wolf.”
The lion, amused and impressed by the fox’s prudence, spared her life. He kept all three animals for himself but allowed the fox to continue living as a trusted advisor in his court. From that day forward, the fox was respected not only for her cleverness but for her ability to learn from the mistakes of others.
